What is happening with the OverDrive app?

Answer

What is happening with the OverDrive app?

OverDrive is discontinuing its original OverDrive app in early 2023.

The original OverDrive app for eBooks and eAudiobooks is no longer available for new downloads to iOS, Android, Windows, or Mac devices. For the moment, it is still available to download for Kindle Fire tablets. (Here are the Kindle Fire OverDrive app instructions.)  The Killam Library OverDrive website is not being discontinued.

Current OverDrive app users may keep using it through 2022, or try other options.

OverDrive is strongly encouraging all users to switch to the Libby app which can be downloaded from your device’s app store or installed directly onto a Kindle Fire tablet until it’s available in the Amazon app store. However, if you already have the legacy OverDrive app, you can keep using it for the time being, though support will be discontinued in early 2023.

If you prefer the OverDrive app experience, you may want to use Killam Library OverDrive and pick the "Read now in browser" or "Listen now in browser" options when you check out materials. But be aware that checkouts will be streamed, not downloaded.

Another app-free option is to use Libbyapp.com in a browser window. It works best in updated versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, and checkouts are also streamed, not downloaded.

If you enjoy the Kindle reading experience, you can use the Libby appLibbyapp.com, the Killam Library OverDrive to borrow and send eBooks via an Amazon account to a Kindle or Kindle app. The Kindle app is the only option for downloading eBooks to a computer to read offline.  Note: available holds should be borrowed and routed through Amazon using Libby, Libbyapp.com, or the Killam Library OverDrive website.
